AI automation and innovation

How can you leverage AI or automation in a way that will make your business more productive without losing out on quality or being penalised for using generative AI?
AI has made a massive impact on the workplace, rapidly changing how we approach our work.
Possiblities range from using Generative AI to brainstorm ideas, create images or video, function calling to simplify the user interface or Agentic AI which can make decisions on mult-step tasks.
Most people will have played with Generative AI and have discovered that understanding how to write prompts effectively makes all the difference on the output. However the real benefit is when you combine tradtional software development with the strengths of AI.
Function calling or Tooling
This is when the AI is given predefined human created functions to select based on the user prompt in order to execute a task. The benefit of this is when you require the AI to return accurate results rather than a generic match. You would use this if you want the AI to return details based upon actual data rather than to create a summarisation of a probable answer. For example, if you were using AI to generate a report based on your company data; you would require the report to be accurate rather than a plausible report based upon the general trend.
Agentic AI
You could say that this is AI on steroids. In this case the AI is used to make step by step planning and decisions based upon the last step. For example a user might ask it to book hotel accommodation in a location on a specific date.
The agent could then
- create a list of accommodation in the area
- check each one in that list for availability and price
- book a room at the cheapest price
- send the user the confirmation details
Predictions
AI is very useful for making predictions using large scale datasets. For example, you might want it to use a large dataset of used car data to predict the price a given car would sell for based up a variety of metrics: brand, age, mileage, type, etc.
Next Steps
In Summary, what type of AI or how you use it very much depends upon your requirement. The first step is to identify where efficiencies could be made and how that would work with your organisation. After all, your business is unique and that is why your customers choose you. In the same way, your AI solution needs to reflect the key values of your business and your unique requirments.
